Dr. John Doy, at right, was liberated from a jail in St. Joseph, Mo., in June 1859. A group of Lawrence residents rode to St. Joseph, arriving at midnight. They told the jailer they had a horse thief and wanted to put him behind bars. When the jailer opened the cell, the group overpowered him, allowing Doy to escape.

Drayton Tower, right, was billed as "ultramodern" when it opened in 1951 in Savannah, Ga. Although many residents consider the building an eyesore that degrades the city's Old South charm, the Drayton has been declared a historic building.
Sarah Fayman recently renovated her store, Sarah's Fabrics, 925 Mass., in an effort to incorporate the historic elements of the building as well as make her products more easily accessible. Fayman decided to recycle the building's wood to make racks for the fabric and reveal the hardwood floor and tin ceiling.
