When we moved to Lawrence more than 40 years ago, we chose a home within easy walking distance for our three children to Hillcrest, a well-regarded elementary school, and to KU for me. Hillcrest has changed since then and now serves a remarkably diverse population. This is both a challenge and a strength. It is still highly regarded. Haskell Indian Junior College officials were pondering new directions for the local school after a series of meetings with officials in Washington. Local people wanted more direct input into the operation of the school and had made that known. The Bureau of Indian Affairs said it would consider the requests to give Haskell more autonomy. There were no immediate indications of such, however.
