The thousands of runners that descended on Lawrence on Sunday for the TherapyWorks Half Marathon and 5K got more than they bargained for. In addition to perfect weather and fewer hills, runners got a tour of Lawrence that opened the eyes of even those familiar with the city.

Jan Dicker’s teaching career in Lawrence has been filled with accolades, and now the Sunset Hill School first-grade teacher is planning to reap the benefits. Dicker, 61, is probably best known for teaching 20 years at the now-closed Grant School in North Lawrence.

Before attending the Wellsville High School prom Saturday, students strolled through downtown in the traditional prom walk, showing off their formal attire to residents gathered to watch. About 50 couples participated in the walk before going to dinner and the dance at the high school.

There is a special sadness in the aftermath of Virginia Tech’s observance of a day of mourning last week. Classes were canceled, and ceremonies were held to honor the 32 students and faculty members killed just a year ago in the deadliest school shooting in American history. It was fitting and proper to pay respect.
