SOUNDOFF ON FOOTBALL PARENTS
October 2, 1999

Kids don’t want to play anymore and say they aren’t having fun. To whom can we talk about this? Seventh-grade football was instigated in Lawrence a few years ago; Jean Shepherd, a Douglas County District Court judge who works on juvenile cases, was the leading proponent. All the seventh-grade teams are coached by Lawrence policemen. Seventh-grade football is part of Lawrence Youth Football Inc. Bret Toelkes is in charge of LYF Inc. His phone number is 749-7308.

OLD HOME TOWN 100 YEARS AGO
October 2, 1999
IN 1899 On Oct. 2, 1899, the Lawrence Journal, commenting on the pending question of brick paving for the city’s streets, noted: “At the meeting of the city council tonight there should be no hesitation or delay. The questions to be decided have been so thoroughly canvassed that there can be no doubt in the mind of any member as to the feeling of the taxpayers in reference to paving. What is done should be done in a clear, decisive way and in a manner that will leave no doubt as to what is intended… The street question is one that the tax payers are tired of having played with. It will not do to put it off any longer.”
