I used to love El Mez on 23rd street but the quality of service & food has gone from great to awful, inconsistent and at times, pretty rude. Don't bother printing or mentioning the coupon above - it's not valid. I thought for sure that the first few times were a fluke but never again, I'll be taking my business to Salty Iguana instead.
I've always had awesome, super nice servers here. They've only messed up my order a few times (probably due to language barrier) but have always been courteous in fixing it. Never a long wait even on busy nights, food is ready within 10 minutes, AWESOME lunch menu (my boyfriend and I can eat here for about $14 tip included). Favorite restaurant in town by far.
Voted best of Lawrence 2013 mexican food and highly disagree. I'm a lawrence native and I looked at the best of Lawrence list and laughed. This list is an abomination so I've come here to destroy it. The food as El Mezcal is just as any other sit down, oven food mexican restaurant I've ever been to. The chips are a mild attraction with how big they are, but you could easily have just as good of food at Salty Iguana. The atmosphere at both locations is loud and conducive to white noise making it hard to have a decent sit down meal. The true attraction of this place is the margaritas, fast seating and service. For authentic mexican I would suggest Tortoise Jalisco on 6th street. It has way better authentic food in general. I give this place 3 stars based on the fact that the food isn't the best authentic mex in Lawrence even, the atmosphere is too crowded and noisy that no one would want to come here to relax. Down with the best of Lawrence 2013 list.
3-Stars because they don't accept their own coupon, printed from the LJWorld website. They claim to only accept the "real coupon" from the actual LJWorld newspaper. Really...does anyone really subscribe to a newspaper service anymore? Kind of ridiculous and nitpicking if you ask me, especially for only a 10% discount. Probably our last visit for not putting the customer first.
The service is always fast and the food is consistent. I was a frequent diner when I first came to Lawrence, but that was before I saw the article about health violations. The other two El Mezcal locations had the two highest amounts for health violations! Although I know that's part of the risk in going out to eat and no restaurant is immune to violations, it definitely makes me wonder if there are still 70-something violations. I haven't returned since then, although I enjoyed the food before, it makes me a little uneasy now.
