Douglas County Commission candidates to take part in two forums ahead of the primary election

Douglas County Commission candidates will be fielding questions at two forums this month ahead of the August primary election.

The first forum is scheduled for 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at KU Innovation Park, 2033 Becker Drive. It is hosted by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, and only Chamber members may attend. Register at https://shorturl.at/FE3BE.

The second forum is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, in Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St. It is hosted by the Douglas County Rural Preservation Association.

The Douglas County Commission has three seats up for the election this year, and all three incumbents are seeking reelection.

In District 1, incumbent Democrat Patrick Kelly, will face a primary challenger, Milton Scott. In district 4, incumbent Democrat Gene Dorsey will face a primary challenge from Ethan Spurling. The winners in these two primaries will be running unopposed in the general election.

Meanwhile, in District 5, incumbent Democrat Erica Anderson will not face a primary challenger, but she will face Libertarian candidate Kirsten Kuhn in the general election.

The primary election will be on Aug. 4, and the general election will be on Nov. 3. The deadline to register to vote or update voter registration information for the primary election is July 14.
