Road markings indicate the bike boulevard route on 21st Street in central Lawrence on Friday, May 29, 2026.
A plan that will guide the city’s future bicycle infrastructure improvements is nearing the finish line, and Lawrence residents can share their feedback on it through the end of the month.
The city announced in a news release Wednesday that its Lawrence Bikes Plan draft was ready for public review and would be open for comments through Wednesday, July 1. If you’re interested in commenting, you can read the draft at lawrenceks.gov/bikeplan, where you’ll also find a form for written comments. You can also email comments to mpo@lawrenceks.gov.
The draft plan is an update to the previous bike infrastructure plan that was approved in 2019. As the Journal-World has reported, in addition to strategies for improving Lawrence’s bike-friendliness, it includes a lot of data from a community survey that got responses from hundreds of frequent bikers.
“The update includes revisions to the bikeway network, updates to the Level of Comfort model that aim to serve all ages and abilities more effectively, and strategies that encourage partnerships across the entire community,” the city’s release said.
After July 1, the release said, the comments will go to the Bikes Plan steering committee for review. Then, the draft will have to be approved by multiple boards and commissions: the Connected City Advisory Board; the Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Board; the Lawrence City Commission; the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization Technical Advisory Committee; and the planning organization’s policy board.
