Patricia and Joseph Johnston, Lawrence, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to Branson, Mo.
They were married Aug. 30, 1966, in Eudora. Their children are Ginny Gillmore, Manhattan, and Amy Hinds, Davenport, Neb. They also have five grandchildren.



Delma and Bert Hitchcock

Bert and Delma Hitchcock, Baldwin, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 26 with a family dinner. The couple also celebrated with a family trip to Disneyland.
Delma Meall, Cawker City, and Bert Hitchcock, Burlington, Colo., were married Sept. 2, 1956, in the Cawker City Methodist Church.
They were graduates of Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina and pursued careers in education.
Delma was an elementary school teacher and homemaker. Bert taught in secondary school and was a principal and superintendent.
They have three children, Steve Hitchcock, Richmond, Mo.; Teri Tankel and her husband, Ron, Overland Park; and Jodi Hitchcock, Lawrence; and two grandchildren.



Freida and Kenneth Martin

Kenneth and Freida Martin, rural Baldwin, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.
Kenneth Martin and Freida Luckan were married Sept. 5, 1956, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence with the Rev. Harold Hamilton officiating.
Their children are Otto and Lisa Martin, Lawrence; Craig and Anita Rapp, Ramsey, Minn.; and Kendra Martin, Baldwin. They have four grandchildren.



Norman and Mary Walker

Norman and Mary Walker, Tonganoxie, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday.
Mary DeHoff and Norman Walker were married Aug. 31, 1946, at Barlow Chapel in Lawrence.
The couple have two children, Rita Walker Bailey and Gary Walker, both of Tonganoxie; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A son, Eddie, died in 1971.
Norman Walker owned and operated Walker Trucking until 1993. He then drove for Kindle Sand and Gravel and retired in 2004. Mary Walker retired from Lawrence Memorial Hospital.



Betty and Harry North

Harry and Betty North, Baldwin, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at The Lodge in Baldwin.
Friends and family are invited.
Harry North and Betty Turner were married Sept. 9, 1956, at Ives Chapel Church in Baldwin.
Harry is owner of Harry North Construction, and Betty was an administrative assistant at E&E Display Group in Lawrence.
Hosts of the reception will be their children, Susan and John Johnson, Baldwin; Tim and Pam North, Kechi; and Brian and Natasha North, Baldwin. They have seven grandchildren.
The couple request no gifts.



Georgie and M.L. Stebbins

M.L. "Bood" and Georgie Stebbins, Perry, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Thursday.
M.L. Stebbins and Georgie Petrie were married Sept. 7, 1946, at the Methodist church in Bonner Springs.
M.L. served two years in the 88th Blue Devil Division, 350th Infantry Regiment, in Italy during World War II. He worked in real estate for 26 years in the Topeka and Lawrence areas, retiring in 1994. He also worked as a custodian and bus driver for 45 years in the Perry-Lecompton school district. After graduating from the Reppert School of Auctioneering in 1949, he and Georgie opened Stebbins Auction Service. They retired in 2003. Georgie worked several years at the Bank of Perry.
Their children include Treva and Chet Bunce, Perry. They also have a grandson.

Wanda and Dale Kring

Dale and Wanda Kring, Lawrence, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Eldridge Hotel.
They were married Sept. 2, 1956, in Bronson.
The Krings have lived in Lawrence for 48 years. Dale founded Parsons & Kring Floor Covering with his partner, Lou Parsons. Wanda retired from the Clerk of the Douglas County District Court's Office after 23 years of service.
Hosts of the open house will be their children, Brit and Lisa Kring and Ken and Kayla Kula, all of Lawrence, and four grandchildren.



Nellie and Lonnie Welch

Lonnie and Nellie Welch, Lawrence, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception July 23 at the Perry United Methodist Church.
They were married Sept. 2, 1956, in Las Cruces, N.M.
They attended schools in New Mexico. Nellie is a retired homemaker and Lonnie is retired from Chevron Corp.
Their children are Bryan and Carolyn Welch, Lawrence, and Blake and Gina Welch, Louisville, Colo.
They have five grandchildren.


Dunagan and Culver

Steve and Helen Blattner, Topeka, and Steve and Mary Culver, Meridan, announce the engagement of their daughter, Tara Culver, to Chuck Dunagan, son of George and Mary Dunagan, Ponca City, Okla.
The bride-to-be grew up in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1997. She earned a bachelor's degree in finance in 2001 from Emporia State University. She is a premium auditor for AIG Insurance in Tulsa, Okla.
The future groom graduated from Ponca City High School in 1988. He attended Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Okla., and Oklahoma State University. He is a PC technician for Mid-Continent Group in Tulsa.
The couple plan a November wedding in Broken Arrow, Okla.

Shannon Flerlage, Minneapolis, Kan., and Kurtis Wenger, Lawrence, announce their engagement along with their family.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Mathew Flerlage, Topeka, and Holly Nichols, Minneapolis. She is a 2001 graduate of Minneapolis High School. She studied human ecology at Kansas State University. She is a sales manager for American Eagle Outfitters in Lawrence.

The future groom is the son of Michael Wenger, Lawrence, and Jacqueline Tidwell, Lawrence. He is a 1999 graduate of Lawrence High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in horticulture at K-State. He is sales manager for Lesco Inc. in Grandview, Mo.

The couple plan an Oct. 20, 2006, wedding at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence.

Laura Ann Maddux and Tyler Andrew Green were married Aug. 5, 2006, at Lawrence Free Methodist Church in Lawrence with Lanny Maddux and Michael Green officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Lanny and Patricia Maddux, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Michael and Linda Green, Okanogan, Wash.

Maid of honor was Angela Maddux. Best man was Ky Shorb. Bridesmaids were Jaime Sauer, Lynn Yoder and Lori Yoder. Groomsmen were Josh Green, Luke Green and Travis Evans. Flower girls were Rebecca Maddux and Lana Desmond. Ring bearer was Trent Schlarman. Guest book attendant was Rae Lynn Desmond. Gift table attendants were Eric Maddux and Caleb Maddux.

A reception was given at the church.

The bride is a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School. She attended Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Mo. She works at Lawrence Free Methodist Church. The groom is a 1998 graduate of McPherson High School. He attended Central Christian College and Colorado Christian University. He plans to attend Johnson County Community College in January. He works for Mesler Roofing.

The couple reside in Lawrence.

The bride-to-be is a 1997 graduate of Lawrence High School. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Kansas University in 2001. She is business manager for Jayhawk Broadcasting.

The future groom is a 1997 LHS graduate. He received a bachelor's degree in geography in 2002 from KU, where he is pursuing a master's degree in geomorphology. He is director of The Hawk Sheet.

The couple plan a Sept. 30, 2006, wedding in Lawrence.

Vanessa Hukle-VanKirk and Joel Rasanen were married Aug. 12, 2006, in the Butterfly Pavilion in Denver with the Rev. Paul Ziegler officiating.

The bride is the daughter of R.C. VanKirk II, Wellsville, and Marian Hukle, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Paul Rasanen, Green River, Wyo., and Linda Dennison, Green River, Wyo.

Maid of honor was Kelley Hukle-VanKirk. Best man was Jeff Rasanen. Bridesmaids were Kristin Rose, Diana Curtis and Jeanie Zwick. Groomsmen were Greg Rasanen and David Rasanen. Flower girl was Destiny Johnson.
A reception was given at the Butterfly Pavilion.

The bride is a 2001 graduate of Lawrence High School. She received a bachelor's degree in systems engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. She is employed as a systems engineer at Raytheon.

The groom is a 2001 graduate of Green River High School. He is employed as a flight medic with the Wyoming Army National Guard as an operations specialist with Tactical Solutions Group in Centennial, Colo.

The couple reside in Denver.

The bride is the daughter of Bernardo and Elvira Torres, Lawrence. The groom is the son of Donna Wilson, Eudora.

Maid of honor was Elvira Torres. Best man was William Ray. Bridesmaids were Jenna Petty, Jessica Alvarez and Katie Self. Groomsmen were Frank Rushe, Phil Lewis and Brent Howard. Bride's assistant was Emily Torres. Ushers were Victor Torres and Joshua Camarena. Reader was Maria Camarena.

A reception was given at Knights of Columbus.

The bride is a graduate of Lawrence High School and Johnson County Community College. She is a nurse at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

The groom is a graduate of Eudora High School. He is a forklift operator at Rehrig Pacific Co. in De Soto.
The couple reside in Perry.

The bride is the daughter of Stephen and Janet Garlow, Lawrence. The groom is the son of John and Dianne Willhite, Parkville, Mo.
Maid of honor was Sarah Garlow. Best man was Alan Willhite. Bridesmaids were Evie Blad and Sarah Elmore. Groomsmen were Justin Willhite and Matt Roberts. Flower girl was Allison Willhite.

The bride is a 2002 Free State High School graduate. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in family and human services in 2005 from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. She is a secretary at Marymount University in Arlington, Va.
The groom is a 2002 graduate of Park Hill South High School in Parkville, Mo. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 2006 at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Alexandria, Va.
