Job Description: Executive Director Family Promise of Lawrence

Family Promise of Lawrence is faith-based program designed to transform lives of homeless families with children by providing shelter, food, counseling, training, transportation and other assistance in a safe and compassionate environment. Functions: To provide case management to homeless families and to coordinate the program components of the Family Promise network – host congregations, volunteers, referring and supporting agencies, day center, and transportation – for the effective provision of services to homeless guests.

Responsibilities:
1. Provide case management to all guest families. Conduct intake interviews with prospective families; develop plans for each family; meet with guests to monitor progress in securing housing, employment, job training, and entitlements, assist guests with social service needs, referring them to other organizations as appropriate; advocate with agencies for guests as needed. 2. Coordinate all network components to administer program. a. Maintain regular contact with coordinators and other individuals at each host congregation as necessary. b. Communicate regularly with referring and supporting agencies and the day center staff. Actively participate in providers’ groups and other forums with social service agencies. c. Organize and schedule transportation, including drivers and van maintenance. Manage schedule changes and any other related transportation matters. 3. Train coordinators and hosts in all new host congregations, and conduct annual volunteer training for each host congregation thereafter. 4. Plan agenda for the Network Committee (director, primary coordinators from each congregation, and one board member) and convene the Network Committee every six to eight weeks, as necessary. 5. Maintain records on network operations and guests’ progress. Provide reports as requests by the Board and as required for funding sources. When requested, provide statistical and other information to Family Promise. 6. Hire and supervise additional staff when authorized. 7. Be on call for emergencies during off hours as scheduled. 8. Manage daily expenses and other operational duties as requested by the board. 9. Work with the board president to plan board meetings. Work with board committees as necessary. 10. Represent FPL to the public and the media. 11. Coordinate master schedule of host congregations, updating to reflect ongoing changes.

Accountability: The executive director reports to the Board of Trustees.

Qualifications: The successful candidate for executive director is an enthusiastic individual with good judgment and compassion for the homeless, and the willingness to enforce the rules for guests and to impose sanctions, including removal from the program. He or she enjoys working with people and helping them solve problems.

Education and experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree; masters preferred. + Three years’ experience in a social service environment; experience in working with homeless preferred. + Experience in managing volunteers desirable.

Skills: + Counseling skills; ability and experience in counseling clients in a social service setting. + Oral and written communication skills; ability to make presentations to large groups. + Planning and organizational skills; ability to multi-task. + Interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with a wide range of people. + Leadership skills: ability to make decisions, delegate tasks and inspire others to carry them out.

Working hours: The executive director works a 40-hour week. During the first six months, additional hours may be required for start-up activities. After hours, the director is on call for emergencies. Also, the director visits a host congregation one night each week.

Salary: $40,000+ depending on skills and experience.
