I had problems cancelling like everyone else. I sent my certified letter to ABC Financial and 3 months later my card was still being charged. ABC Financial does not know what "customer service" means and I couldn't get a call back from Body Boutique mangers so I had to dispute the charges through my credit card company. Ridiculous! Plus the gym isn't all that great. It's really small and was always crowded when I went there. The problem is really the size of the place, though, and not the number of members. The cardio machines are crammed close together in an upstairs area and the weight machines are crammed in the little area next to the class area. When there were people waiting for the next class to start, they'd be standing around in the weights area getting in the way. Not really their fault, though, because there is literally nowhere else for them to go. Every time I'd see one of their ads on TV I'd be like NOOO!!!! No more people!! Plus, the classes are right out in the open with incredibly loud music and the instructors yelling all kinds of annoying things. WOOO!! OH YEAH!!! Could hear them over my iPod even at the loudest volume I could stand. The classes I wanted to take were always too late in the morning (after I had to be at work) or too early in the evening (before I got off work). Not 8-5 working woman friendly at all. Lawrence desperately needs a good gym! I'm tempted to go back to school at KU so I can use theirs.
I just got off the phone with the owner of Body Boutique. She's a reasonable woman and we worked out our problem. We've never had a problem with the actual service that Body Boutique offers, just the way they handle closing an account. While I can't say I agree with their practice, I can say that the owner handled the situation correctly and our problem has been resolved.
lawrence_resident - boy, you are a disgruntled person/man. sorry to hear your harsh words about body boutique. would be very interesting to hear their side of the story. i find it very interesting that you are slamming so many lawrence businesses all in one day. i read your harsh words about meadowbrook apartments and the professional moving storage, too. would be interesting to hear their stories as well. i would recommend using your nice voice - you would probably get better results from all the people with whom you do business.
I second kaw7987's feedback. It's a great place but my budget needed to be trimmed and this had to go. I couldn't justify continuing my membership because I need workout classes starting at 5:00 a.m. in order to get to work in Kansas City by 7:30 each day. The ENTIRE notion of being required to write a letter to the company that handles their accounts, specifically requesting that your membership be discontinued, AND sending that letter by certified mail is such BAD PRACTICE. Now that I've been dealing with this, I can't tell others how many other women have told me how much they detested the place because of thIS same thing. When I can afford a gym membership again, I'm taking my business to Maximus. It's very sad because the women who run the fitness classes that I've attended are sweet, supportive, and much better than this gym's owners.
I have been a member at many gyms and have found Body Boutique to be one of the best in terms of facility offerings, services and staffing. The kids exercise classes are wonderful too, so be sure to ask about those if you are a mom who wants some time to herself.
The classes for members are PHENOMENAL! Yeah, I pretty much think this place rocks!
The facility is alright, but they really go to a distance to make sure they get the most money from you, and there is nothing you could do to stop them.
First of all, to join the gym, you have to sign a year contract. Yes, they will tell you what sweet deals that they have in store for you. But always ask the details. Because those fine prints are the ones that will get you later on (and they are quite ridiculous, so make sure you know them all).
The building is small, they only have a set of weight machines, and few cardio machines upstairs. The classes are in the middle of everything, and open. So if you like doing your exercise in peace, do not go here because it can get really noisy with the music and the class instructors' yells. The ambiance is quite dark, which I don't really like (sometimes the lights above the cardio machines are not working, which made it even more darker and annoying). Some of the staffs are very nice, but most of them are quite rude and snobs.
The childcare system gives me a mix feelings. The idea is quite nice, but the practice is not. I don't know exactly if they clean the toys regularly, but everytime I put my tot in there, she always got a bad cold. Always. To the point that I hesitated in putting her back in there. 7 days of bad cold, one day of not having any cold, back in the daycare, the next day the sniffles are back, then the thick green mucus. And so on. I have to admit that some of the childcare staffs are really, really friendly and helpful. There are a couple of them though, that looked like they hate kids and dragging their legs to work. Maybe they hate the job, maybe it is a hard job(the childcare room could be filled with 30 kids at one time ranging from infant to 12 yo with only 3 staffs).
Important thing to know, your agreement says how many time (months) you have to pay, and there is an AUTO-RENEWAL with your agreement (to stop this and quit, you have to write a letter to them and send it with a certified mail). And there is also the 90-days notification. So know when you want to quit, otherwise you will be forced to pay 3 months worth of membership. And that 90-days rule also apply to other add-on services like childcare, even if is NOT WRITTEN in my contract (what, they need to clean the room first like an apartment or find a good candidate to replace your kid like a job, that they need 90 days notification? Or simply a way to get more money from you).
P.S. Apparently I have about 5 college friends who got burnt by their ridiculously ripping contracts. They were still in their early 20s (not even 23). Please, not everyone has 50 years experiences dealing with sharks. So I guess Body Boutique also serves as a learning tool for kids who barely left the safety of their homes and their sheltering parents, and who barely made any money. Be proud, Body Boutique.
P.S.S. And those nice bubly ladies in front desk who show you their whole sets of their teeth when you were about to join the gym? They turned into rude rigid beyotches when you ask them anything about stopping membership.
Body Boutique is super clean. I like the variety of ellipticals and other exercise equipment. The Les Mills classes are the BEST for challenging workouts that get results. I also appreciate how they switch up the work out routines frequently so it's always fresh.
UPDATE I wrote Body Boutique a horrible review two years ago. I had an awful experience when my contract ended. What a mess! I'm going to forgive and forget, though. I have signed a new contract in hopes for a better experience this go around. I've been told that the external billing company is different now. I was able to get a really great introductory offer. Also, they're remodeling and making the facility twice as large. So, I think it will be more worth the money at that point. I've taken my review from one star to three. I'll update again as I see fit.
I'm editing this review because I liked Body Boutique until I attempted ending my membership. I received different answers from each person I talked to there about when my contract ended and what I had to do to get out of it. You're required to send a certified letter to an external company to be relieved from your contract even if it's up. Body boutique gave me the information and told me a specific month to contact the external company to terminate my account. When I called the external company at the instructed time, they told me that I should have called months ago. You're required to pay for three months after the cancellation letter is received. When I called to complain to b.b. that their staff gave me inconsistent and incorrect information I was consistently interrupted and told that I was giving untrue information according to their phone records. They are so confident in their staff that they continued to tell me that this employee whom has worked there for years wouldn't give me false information. I felt as if this woman was flat out calling me a lair. She insisted that I was told to call months ago which was absolutely not true. Yes, they gave the information to call months ago when I requested it but they instructed me to call when my membership was up, gave me that date, and didn't say a word about the letter. If they told me to contact the company then I definitely would have, it was for money issues that I wanted to cancel my membership in the first place. I will have to pay over 100 dollars more because their staff, conveniently for them, gave me the wrong information. What a disappointment... after all of the great recommendations I've given this place then they treat me like that! I discourage anyone I can from getting a membership here. Go to maximus where you can pay month by month and not be treated like you're a liar.
