just not in the last year or so, right Sven?

lulz is this the sort of childishness we can expect if you are elected? Will you ball up your fists and start complaining about conspiracies whenever anyone does something you dislike?

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 10 months ago

Quite a mature response from a candidate for local government. Will you ask members of the public to leave the room at meetings if you don't like their opinions?

Did your creative thinking and clear vision help you see your own bankruptcy or was that a surprise to you?

I agree that our trash service is not broken, and privatizing it is a terrible idea. Look at every other solution to the revenue shortfall, there are many, and the shortfall amounts to hardly anything when spread over all the trash cans in Lawrence.

BruceWayne 3 years, 10 months ago

well you had to figure todays big news would land you a certain demographic.

Catalano 3 years, 10 months ago

Oh, for crying out loud...the question asked says:

Which THREE candidates will be elected to the Lawrence City Commission? If you don't like it, ask them to change the wording and the way votes register.

And, could you please cite some case law for me?

Catalano 3 years, 10 months ago

Even better, it doesn't even ask which three candidates you will vote for. Three candidates WILL be elected.

Flap Doodle 3 years, 10 months ago

swanny, did somebody do No. 1 in your cereal this morning?

Jonathan Kealing 3 years, 10 months ago

It's been brought to my attention that candidate Sven Alstrom objects to this poll because he was not able to vote for himself — and only himself — and have his vote count.

In an e-mail sent to several employees of the World Company as well as several members of the Lawrence community, Mr. Alstrom documented that he had several of his friends attempt to vote for him — and only him — only to see their votes not count.

To be perfectly clear, for your vote to be valid, you MUST choose three candidates who you think will win this election. If you do so, your vote will be registered provided, 1) You haven't voted in this poll before and 2) No one sharing your IP address has voted in this poll.

We do not have the desire, nor the ability, in this case, really, to discourage anyone from indicating which candidates they think will be elected in Lawrence. We're not perpetrating election fraud — as one of his associates accused us of — nor even trying to discourage Mr. Alstrom from running a comprehensive campaign. In fact, we were so interested in having a fair election with commentary from both sides, that we restored Mr. Alstrom's access to our website, despite having banned him more than a half dozen times previously.

Jonathan Kealing Assistant Director of Media Strategy

Boston_Corbett 3 years, 10 months ago

a half-dozen times? More like a dozen plus something times.

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 10 months ago

This is the funniest thing I have read in a long time. I wonder who his "associate" is. No doubt Sven will blame his eventual loss on the LJW and other external factors.

woodscolt 3 years, 10 months ago

"In fact, we were so interested in having a fair election with commentary from both sides, that we restored Mr. Alstrom's access to our website, despite having banned him more than a half dozen times previously." Jonathan Kealing

ah, the truth comes out why you reinstated Mr. Alstom. The covering of the proverbial a............... theory wins.

Just an innocent observation.

Flap Doodle 3 years, 10 months ago

Should Sven Alstrom not be elected to the Lawrence City Commission, his current account will be banned

Whitney Mathews Assistant Community Editor for Online

parrothead8 3 years, 10 months ago

Does it follow, then, that if he IS elected then his current account will NOT be banned? Sooo...has he, or has he not engaged in online behavior (using his current account) that should get him banned? And if he is elected, why should a public official be allowed to keep an account while practicing behavior that would get anyone else banned? That seems like preferential treatment.

Katara 3 years, 10 months ago

So when are you going to bring back all of his other online personas so that the voters can see them for themselves and make a decision?

And you should make sure they are all "verified" with his name.

Jonathan, I'm curious about your second point "No one sharing your IP address has voted in this poll."

It doesn't make a difference in my case as I only log on here at home and I'm the only one to do so here, but does that mean that for those that are logging on here from their place of employment, only one registered user will be able to vote?

For example of all the people that work at KU and manage to find time to comment on this site during the day, the first one that manages to get here will be able to vote while the others are denied?

Jonathan Kealing 3 years, 10 months ago

It depends on how your network is setup. I believe KU gives each user an individual IP. Some businesses don't, most home networks don't. It is conceivable, though, that you'd have to be the first person to see a poll in order to vote.

Richard Heckler 3 years, 10 months ago

Sven Erik Alstrom will make an outstanding commissioner because he will bring discussion to the table. And he will not always agree with the rest which is what this commission needs.

Will I agree with all votes he casts? Very likely not!

Why have 5 like thinkers on the city commission? That is a recipe for reckless economics.

independent_rebel 3 years, 10 months ago

Not that I would have ever voted for Sven, but the mere fact that merrill states that Sven "will make an outstanding commissioner because he will bring discussion to the table" seals the deal for me.

What kind of discussion? Have you not followed him on here?

Sven is the only candidate whose views are somewhat in line with the ordinary citizen. the other four are lackeys for the Chamber of Commerce. In view of the large number of Lawrencians who consider themselves progressive, it's a shame we have a very lackluster, developer-friendly slate of candidates to choose from. Lawrence may be a lot of so-called liberals and progressives, but activists they are not.

So it appears the last thing Sven was involved in was 2008. What has he been doing since? Not much...I think it is safe to say he spent the last 4 years fighting USD 497. How much did the frivolous lawsuit against USD 497 cost us the taxpayers? Sven has personal issues with many, I didn't just wake up one day and decide not to like him. I feel it is the responsibility of the LJW to post ALL previous comments by Sven so that the voting public can decide if this is the kind of person Lawrence wants/needs in office. It has been on this very site that he attempted to out anonymous members, make threats against anyone that did not agree with him, and make personal attacks on Dan Rockhill, Tom Bracciano, Randy Weisman, Rick Doll, and every successful architect firm in this town.

not_dolph 3 years, 10 months ago

I also think it is of value for voters to be aware of things candidates support or believe in - not that we need to support or oppose those things, but to be informed when checking off names at the ballot box. Your comments on Huffington Post are a good indication -

Here's an example:

Sven Erik Alstrom 07:03 PM on 11/26/2010 39 Fans Influened a lot by Gore Vidal's writings and my own thoughts --- HOMOeroticism has been around since DAY ONE, whenever that was --- 'we' that understand homoeroticism as well as homosexual behaviour are long part of the co-evolution of the species - we are a naturally occuring phenomena, hence- part of the natural order of things, evolving in concert with our brothers & sisters of GAIA. (often in spite of their intolerance)

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 10 months ago

I asked this in another thread in regard to equal treatment of various candidates, but I will ask it here because it appears to be relevant to this quote: are you gay? I am not asking in a pejorative sense, but other candidates either implicitly or explicitly discussed marital status in their filing documents.

jafs 3 years, 10 months ago

Why is that any of your business (or mine, for that matter)?

Are you voting for people on the basis of their sexual preference?

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 10 months ago

Absolutely not. However, the profiles and filing documents of other candidateshad extensive information about marital status either implicitly or explicitly. To an extent, such information allows one to determine any possible conflict of interests. However, if one is gay and does not disclose a long term relationship, one could hide important information from voters.

jafs 3 years, 10 months ago

Do you have any such possibility in mind?

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 10 months ago

No. I asked the question simply because I thought it deserved to be asked. I do not understand the negativity a progressive candidate would associate with the question and I do not understand why it wouldn't be answered.

jafs 3 years, 10 months ago

You're kidding, right?

Even in Lawrence, there's plenty of anti-gay sentiment around.

Perhaps the better question would be if the candidate has any conflicts of interest, for whatever reason.

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 10 months ago

Perhaps. My point is that the filing documents and the newspaper ought to be fair on the matter. Either gather all the information or none of it.

My statement regarding progressive candidates doesn't really have anything to do with community perception, it has more to do with how a candidate regards the issue himself. Community perception is a cop out. If, for example, a gay progressive candidate runs for office (in any capacity) and refuses to discuss the issue then can one really say that candidate is really, truly progressive? Isn't a candidate's silence on the issue an indicator that the candidate perceives homosexuality as a negative? What does it say about a potential candidate that implicitly lies about himself?

Understand that I am not suggesting that Sven is doing any of these things or that he is indeed gay. I simply asked the question and he hasn't answered. I thought it was a question worth asking and I am surprised by both the silence and the negativity toward simply asking the question.

jafs 3 years, 9 months ago

I disagree.

If I were running for office, and knew that my sexuality would be controversial, I'd tend to keep it private as well.

After all, it's really none of anybody's business.

Stance on issues, conflicts of interest, etc. are reasonable items for public discussion.

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 9 months ago

We clearly disagree. I think hiding that information is problematic on two levels. First, it says something about the candidate as a person and how that candidate might represent that segment of the electorate.

Second, it allows the possibility for hidden stances and conflicts of interest. For example, although I would disagree with it, one might base one's vote on how one perceives an official might vote on a civil rights issue. That person might logically conclude that a candidate's sexuality might shed light on how that candidate might vote on such an issue.

jafs 3 years, 9 months ago

I'm not surprised - you seem very interested in everybody's personal lives.

Both of the items you mention are easily addressed by asking substantive questions about policy.

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 9 months ago

You are incorrect here, but I understand. I am not interested in the private lives of people except when those people thrust themselves into public debate and argue positions contrary to their private behavior. For example, there is a user here that constantly advocates for the T but does not use the T and, indeed, works in an industry that is both dependent on gasoline and highly polluting. I do not care what he does in his private life, but I do care when he advocates for higher taxes to support a pet project he doesn't use but, in short, thinks everyone else should use.

This situation is slightly different, but I asked the question because it seemed fair based on the existing information posted about other candidates. Sven's silence on the subject - in my opinion only - means he is either ashamed to answer because he perceives homosexuality negatively or his unwillingness to alienate that portion of the electorate by saying he is straight. If the former is true, it opens him up to a set of questions about possible conflicts of interest that are not obvious on the forms. If the latter is true, it is cynical politics.

I do, however, agree with you that the filing information forms are both antiquated and not particularly informative. The forms could either get around this issue by asking about conflicts of interest in a more general sense or address it directly by requesting partner information.

tribalzendancer 3 years, 9 months ago

Your attention to Sven's sexual orientation, and insinuation, and implicit attempt to play on ignorant homophobic views is truly sick (in the flu sense).

The excuse about conflicts of interest is transparently obvious, and just a cover for your homophobia. Very sad.

I seriously can't believe the LJW hasn't done anything on Sven spamming his campaign info all over the web. http://tinyurl.com/svenspam

There were over 300 hits a couple of days ago. A lot of blogs have flushed the svenspam. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It's the World Wide Web for a reason. If you're going to find reasons to dislike him, there are already plenty on display in this thread. No need to drag irrelevant bits about where the website's hosted.

Isn't that fascinating? I wonder where oreadcoffee was hosted...

Petronius - please refresh for our memories a little tête à tête that was held on these here very threads a few years ago - when you had a much cool-er identity of course. You were engaging in the defaming of a local businessman/restaranteur and the remodel of his homebased business...oh and the type of SUV he drove at the time. Can you fill us in on those details? Did you actually contract with Mr. Krause?

BruceWayne 3 years, 9 months ago

If JK would allow the comments that caused the ban it would be anything BUT hogwash. I know it...you know it.

not_dolph 3 years, 9 months ago

I'm quite certain I could put my hands on a portion of them Bruce. I copied and pasted some of his drivel, even back then, into various posts. I'll check. It's telling - for sure.

not_dolph 3 years, 9 months ago

I love how you completely avoid the question and change the subject. Is this what we can expect from your type of leadership on the city commission? It's becoming clearer each day...

jafs 3 years, 9 months ago

This is for glock - the thread got silly.

I've seen you ask very personal questions of many on the forum - seems like you're more interested in their personal lives than I am, for the most part.

How much merrill pays in taxes, whether Sven owns his home or not, what his sexuality is, etc. are none of my (or your) business in my opinion, unless we happen to be friends.

I think it's much better (more appropriate, and more fruitful) to discuss issues and ideas.

I, for example, support the idea of public transportation even though I can't use it much, due to the poor routes and schedules. If we were discussing public transportation, I'd be more interested in discussing why or why not it's a good idea, whether the current system is a good one, possible improvements, etc.

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 9 months ago

I apologize for my slow response. I have quite a bit of business going on right now and I wanted to give you a worthwhile reply. You cite two examples (Merrill and Sven), so let me address them directly because I think they are probably the primary examples of your disagreement with me.

In both cases, these people have thrust themselves into public debate that has a direct impact on taxpayers. In my opinion, if you are trying to take my money and you are a public figure (more or less), that gives people a wider latitude to ask questions.

I've said it before and I will stand by it: Merrill doesn't discuss issues, he shouts. A forum should be a debate about issues in much the same way a cafe might operate. However, Merrill behaves like the crazy man who walks into the debate, shouts down everyone else and leaves. It isn't helpful and one can't question his position. Can one ignore his posts? Absolutely, but even spam has a small percent success rate.

Would I rather discuss the utility of public transport? Yes. I did an entire statistical analysis of it once just to prove a point (that a ride costs taxpayers $15 round-trip). Did it get any response from the vocal minority? No.

Given that I can't question his stance on the issues, all I can do is question his motivation. I've found him to be hypocritical and the only way to expose that is questioning the difference between what he says and what he does. Is it fair? I think so. He questions (generally) the amount of money other people make, the amount of taxes other people pay and how other people should live their lives.

--continued--

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 9 months ago

--continuation, sorry about that--

I think all the questions asked of Sven have been relevant. He is campaigning for office and thus the bar is very, very low. I think property ownership in the area is a relevant question because it is a measure of how much one is invested (literally) in the area. I do not think that non-owners should be excluded, however. I also think Sven's evasiveness on the issue goes back to his general lack of honesty. Why not just say he lives in a home owned by his mother?

I agree with you that - typically - someone's sexuality isn't anyone's business. If you search on my posts, you will find broad support for gays in the military and other issues that people would not typically associate with me. However, when I noticed that all the other candidates implicitly or explicitly discussed marital status and conflict of interest, I thought it was worth asking the question. When Sven was silent on the issue it, again, made me question his honesty. If he is a progressive and is comfortable with himself, he shouldn't have a problem answering the question one way or another. Is it important to me? Sexuality in itself wouldn't factor into my vote, but I would be inclined to vote against someone - particularly a progressive - I knew was lying about it to gain votes because it reeks of hypocrisy. Do I think others might vote based on this issue? Probably, and while I think that is sad, I also think that voters should be informed. One may vote for or against a candidate based on that answer because of their perception of how a candidate might vote on an issue.

Finally, I think there are a lot of questions worth asking about Sven. The spam campaign is foremost among them. Theft of services in the name of a political candidacy should be a big story, but the LJW has been remarkably silent. Behavior on the most popular message board in town is another question that should be addressed but the LJW is remarkably silent about it. My guess is that the LJW believes Sven has no chance of winning and simply doesn't want to deal with his problematic personality, but this is unfair to the process and the other candidates.

I for one think whether a candidate for city commission owns real property or other financial interests in the community where their vote could affect them personally are pertinent. There is no expectation of privacy here.

petronius - how do you feel about the building that a private company recently wanted to build on the plaza as part of redevelopment efforts? Is this one of the projects you refer to when you say you have been a part of 6-8 projects from Kansas City to Topeka? Because, from what I can tell, you've just engaged in a bunch of online negative commenting on pages such as facebook, etc. Is that what you mean when you say you've been a part of a project? Help us understand more clearly please.

not_dolph 3 years, 9 months ago

We will let the voters decide for themselves. Here folks - go take a look at the city commission candidate's involvement in a Kansas City project. Simply follow the thread to view his comments...I mean involvement:

This post is not about the Oread - it's about the type of person who is a candidate for city commission.

Let's continue to be clear - for months as the Oread property was being discussed and developed, Sven railed against the project and the developers incessantly. He took pride on these threads when obstacles were put up against the development, and specifically rejoiced one particular time when vandals caused damage at the construction site.

So look what he puts on some facebook site for which he is the administrator/creator:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=110576222327765&v=wall Sven Erik Alstrom DEMOLITION WARNING: Tom Fritzel developer of The OREAD is applying for demolition of this historic house near KU and construction of a five story student housing project. House is one of six significant structures in the area.

But then he says this even more recently on that same facebook page:

Sven Erik Alstrom The OREAD http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2010/dec/28/vanished-place/?letters_to_editor Vanished place / LJWorld.com www2.ljworld.com By Sven Erik Alstrom, Lawrence December 29, 2010 at 6:02am · Like · Comment · View Feedback (4)Hide Feedback (4). Why do you lie to us petronius? Do you think we are unaware of who you are and how you really operate?

gl0ck0wn3r 3 years, 9 months ago

I'm curious Sven: what projects are you working on right now (2011) that can be verified? Further, because it was obvious from every other candidate except you, what is your 2010 and 2011 expected income (roughly). I think these questions are germane to the discussion.

The owners of spam-bots generally charge for their services. sven, have you listed that as a campaign expense?

Flap Doodle 3 years, 9 months ago

Looks like Behrman@gmail.com also promotes the same adult website that rippstein@gmail plugs.

Did the svombie to go uptown wearing a blackhat?

kinder_world 3 years, 9 months ago

I would vote for none of these candidates. Dever is proud of the money already mis-used. Several others wish to mis-use more. Farmland will turn out to cost much more than expected and citizens will pick up the bills. Again. Used to think Schumm had some common sense but not after reading his piece in the paper. Business as usual. Tax. Tax. Tax. Think of new ways to tax. Special taxes, different taxes. New taxes.

Machell has a special interest in Mail Order Pharmacy (aka...he works for a PBM company) and yet "wants" money to stay IN Lawrence?

What a crock...dont' vote for Machell.

I don't know why I read this pap. I am banning myself from reading the comment section. While I am at it I will not be renewing my paper subscription based solely on D.S. Jr's ramblings. Should I put that in the form a of question?

Flap Doodle 3 years, 9 months ago

Two weeks since the svombie has posted anything. So much for giving him the chance to discuss his campaign on LJW.

jayhawklawrence 3 years, 9 months ago

I would like to see someone running for City Commission who was a good business manager and was focused on actually lowering the cost of living in Lawrence.

I think the way of the future is frugality. We have to learn how to live with less and enjoy what we have more. We cannot continue to dream up projects to spend money on.

When you study the platforms of the candidates they always sound good. Some are better than others at packaging the product but you never know what you will get when you get it out of the box.

When the first thing people do is start talking about raising taxes, that tells me they lack the intelligence or training to manage the City of Lawrence. They simply have no common sense.
