City distance runners shine at Barrier Breakers meet

LHS senior Hannah Stewart chases down the leader in the 800 meter run during Free State High School's Barrier Breakers meet on April 12, 2019.

It was a special day for Free State senior distance runner Anna Riley.

She made it into her dream school, University of British Columbia in Vancouver, posted two top 20 times in the 3200-meter run (12:35) and then the 1600-meter run (5:44). Combined, the two races are 12 laps, and 3 miles. In the mile, she was one second off from her personal record.

“In the two years I’ve moved here, we’ve all gotten really close and supportive, and we all just want each other to succeed,” Riley said. “A lot of it is realizing we’re not just competing against each other, we’re competing against other schools.”

Both Free State and Lawrence High shined on the track across all distance events Friday afternoon, with each having plenty of athletes coming home with hardware at Free State’s Barrier Breakers meet.

Free State’s Julia Larkin led the way with a fourth-place finish in the 3200-meter (12:00). Erin Fagan, Riley, Erin Liston, Noel White, Maddie Day and Corinne Scales all broke the barrier time of 12:30 to medal.

Auna Childress posted two top three finishes in the field with a first-place finish in the triple jump, winning with a mark of 39-foot-4 and placing third in the long jump with a mark of 16-foot-6.25. Laila Robinson won the high jump with a mark of 5-foot-2.

Lawrence’s middle distance crew of Hannah Stewart and Evann Seratte each posted strong finishes, with Seratte racing a 1:01.69 in the 400-meter dash to take third, and Stewart taking second overall in the 800-meter run with 2:21. Brenna Schwada and Ozi Ajekwu each raced with a barrier breaking time in the 400-meter run.

Asjah Harris took two second-place finishes with a time of 12.88 in the 100-meter dash and 25.64 in the 200-meter dash. Bella Kirkwood, Ashley Wildeman and Sienna King also broke the barrier time in the 200-meter dash, all below 28.80.

For the boys, AJ Powell led the way for the Lions with a 154-foot-1 throw to place sixth in javelin. Bryce Tibke also took 10th with a throw of 146-foot-7. Declan Oberzan took third in the pole vault with a mark of 12-foot-0 to earn a medal.

Graham Hough made it to the top three twice for the Lions in the sprinting events with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash. Dre Bridges also earned a medal in the 200-meter dash.

Both schools will look to improve on their times in the 92nd running of the Kansas Relays. The high school races start at 10 a.m. Friday.
