A 34-year-old Baldwin City woman was arrested Sunday after allegedly assaulting a police officer with a rock and barricading herself inside a residence.
The officer responded to a domestic violence call just after 9 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Eisenhower Street, according to a news release from Baldwin City Police Chief Mike Pattrick.
The suspect reportedly threw a large rock at the responding officer and then barricaded herself inside the residence. Law enforcement officers from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Baldwin City Police Department forced entry into the residence and arrested the suspect, whom Pattrick identified as Jacqueline Smith.
On Monday, Smith, who was previously known as Leyonna Smith until she was granted a legal name change in January, was charged with misdemeanor assault on a law enforcement officer, misdemeanor interference with law enforcement and misdemeanor criminal damage to property, which was listed in the charging document as a door.
Smith has had multiple run-ins with law enforcement, going back to 2014, including misdemeanor convictions for battery, battery on a law enforcement officer, domestic battery, disorderly conduct, and two felony convictions for criminal threat.
Court records indicate that Smith desired a name change because she was “wanting a fresh start.”
Smith was scheduled to have her first court appearance Monday afternoon.
