A U.S. Postal Service worker lost the tip of her finger when she was attacked by a dog Thursday afternoon while delivering mail in Lawrence.

The attack happened in the 1100 block of New York Street in East Lawrence a little before 2 p.m., Lawrence police said.

When officers arrived, they found the woman inside a nearby home, where she had escaped to get away from the dog.

In addition to losing the tip of her finger, she also sustained a puncture wound on her leg.

Paramedics with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical treated her at the scene, then took her to the hospital for further care, police said.

The police department’s Animal Control officer cited the owner for having a dangerous animal and an animal at large. The dog’s owner cooperated with the investigation and produced vaccination records. The dog will be in quarantine for 10 days while the investigation continues.
