The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 64-year-old man was taken to a Kansas City area hospital Wednesday morning with apparent stab wounds.

Later in the day a suspect, Heather Sue Williams, 47, of Lawrence, was arrested on suspicion of felony aggravated battery in connection with the incident.

Lawrence police first encountered the man at 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of East 11th Street and Haskell Avenue after a person had attempted to take the injured man to the hospital, but the person’s vehicle had broken down, according to a release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Medics then took the man to a hospital for treatment.

Officers on the scene determined the stabbing happened in rural Douglas County in the 1200 block of East 1900 Road, and sheriff’s deputies responded to the residence to investigate.
