A late winter preliminary hearing date was set on Wednesday for a former University of Kansas basketball player who has been charged with rape.
Arterio Demetrius Morris, 20, of Dallas, faces one felony count of rape in connection with an incident on Aug. 28, 2023, involving an 18-year-old woman at the KU basketball players’ dormitory, McCarthy Hall, as the Journal-World reported.
Morris was originally scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on Dec. 29, but that hearing was canceled due to a COVID case. The new date is March 1 from 1 to 5 p.m.
At the preliminary hearing, the state will argue that there is sufficient evidence for the court to order Morris to stand trial.
Morris, represented by Lawrence attorney Hatem Chahine, appeared via Zoom on Wednesday in the courtroom of Judge Sally Pokorny. Deputy District Attorney Joshua Seiden and Assistant District Attorney Samantha Foster appeared for the state.
Morris was suspended from the basketball team after the allegations were made public and was dismissed from the KU basketball program after he was formally charged.
He is currently free on a $75,000 surety bond.
