Police investigate a fatal stabbing in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026.

A 20-year old Kansas City, Missouri, man is dead after a stabbing near Seventh and Massachusetts streets in downtown Lawrence, according to a statement from Lawrence police.

Police are still looking for the suspect in the stabbing, and the public is being asked to avoid the crime scene area. The 700 block of Massachusetts Street was taped off Sunday morning, and the scene extended eastward through a breezeway and into the parking lot between Massachusetts and New Hampshire streets, where investigators were gathering evidence.

Police were called to the scene around 2:40 a.m. Sunday. Officers found the wounded man lying on the sidewalk. He was taken to an area hospital but did not survive his wounds, the Lawrence Police Department announced via social media report early Sunday morning.

The identity of the victim and other details have not been released. The Lawrence Police Department is asking any witnesses to call 785-843-TIPS. Police also are asking businesses that have cameras in the area to contact the department.
