A 20-year old Kansas City man is dead after a stabbing near Seventh and Massachusetts streets in downtown Lawrence, according to a statement from Lawrence police.

Police are still looking for the suspect in the stabbing, and the public is being asked to avoid the crime scene area.

Police were called to the scene at about 2:40 a.m. on Sunday morning. Officers found the wounded man lying on the sidewalk. He was taken to an area hospital but did not survive his wounds, the Lawrence Police Department announced via social media report early Sunday morning.

The identity of the victim has not been released. Other details of the stabbing have not been released. The Lawrence Police Department is asking any witnesses to call 785-843-TIPS. Police also are asking businesses that have cameras in the area to also contact the department.
