The Hilltop Child Development Center at the University of Kansas is set to close at the end of next month after more than a year of state violations that plunged the center into turmoil.

The center will remain open through Oct. 30 for infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms, “provided that it meets all safety, staffing and licensing requirements,” KU spokeswoman Erinn Barcomb-Peterson said in an email statement to the Journal-World. The center will remain open through Oct. 23 for after-school care classrooms.

Barcomb-Peterson said that the Hilltop Board of Directors on Tuesday approved a plan to “conclude operations” at the child development center.

“This difficult decision followed a comprehensive review that considered the financial resources required for Hilltop to maintain high-quality care; regulatory and child-safety responsibilities; sustainable qualified staffing, reliable leadership coverage, and consistent classroom teams; enrollment growth; and facilities investment — all of which are critical for a durable future,” Barcomb-Peterson said.

Barcomb-Peterson said that KU is communicating with families that are enrolled at the center, as well as Hilltop employees. Employees will receive “direct information and support related to employment and benefits,” Barcomb-Peterso said.

“As Hilltop concludes operations, the university will work with community partners to identify ways to strengthen connection to community childcare and family support,” Barcomb-Peterson said.
