I never get anything but bills and junk mail. What is the point of worrying about it on Saturday?

No, especially if it meant that postal rates would remain the same for quite a long time. In fact, I think it's a great idea for better managing their resources.

I would have to say I am against this change… Maybe its just the Lawrence post office that should stay open on Saturdays, since they can't ever seem to get it right… Case in point… How in the hell does it take 21 days for my state tax return to get to Topeka… It's a 20 minute freakin drive, and it takes 1 letter 21 days to travel it… The Lawrence post office is run by spider monkeys who just like to throw poo… I say, make them work 7 days a week or until they actually figure out how to deliver the mail…. on time…!

Do people actually still use the USPS? I know that businesses use it to flood our mailboxes with garbage and that's it. Maybe they should only deliver mail one day a week. Better yet, maybe everyone should receive their bills electronically and we could eliminate these scumbags who use the mail to hassle.

This might be a good thing. They wouldn't need to raise stamp prices for a long long time!

nana, do you really believe they would cut the price of postage? Uh huh. Ain't gonna happen. I have to agree with bossa_nova, all it would do is make me miss my weekend netflix delivery. Of course, with the watch instantly thingy on Netflix now, maybe that wouldn't be such a big deal. Ah…instant gratification.

I don't get anything in the mail of any importance. Just junk mail…I think that they could switch to every other day and I'd be fine with it.

Only if they reduced their staff and fees by approximately 1/7th. Also, while we are fixin the Post Office. All “free” political mailings should be outlawed.

Since I have a degree in PostOffice ology I'll go ahead and throw in my professional opinion and opine on the subject. I hope you noticed the amount sarcasm dripping from this. Nonetheless, I would support not delivering mail on Saturday, but still transporting it to the distribution facilities and post office boxes. I could be wrong on this, but I believe this is how UPS, and maybe FedEx, operate. They deliver, unless you pay an exhorbitant fee, Mon-Fri; but, they still move packages through their various points on Saturday. Just my three and a half cents. And hey, at the very least it'd cut down on gas consumption by the USPS, and in theory, lower operational costs.

I worked at the post office briefly and can tell you that the pay is very good. $17.51 an hour to start as a rural delivery carrier. LOTS of overtime available because the volume of mail is tremendous. A lot of it junk mail, but its what keeps the people employed. Cutting out Saturday delivery wouldn't be too bad for the rural carriers in my opinion, but it might be tough for the city carriers who have to walk a lot of their routes. They would have to make more trips back to the vechicles to replenish their sachels. And they are timed on deliveries. Some have to scan bar codes left in certain areas to prove they are delivering the mail. It's a tougher job than most people would think. You have to memorize hundreds (like 400 in a small route) of addresses. And you have to know more than 1 area. When I resigned, I had at least 9 areas learned that accounted for over 4000 homes. And a lot of homes have more than one occupant with different last names and you have to know that too. So, I would guess I probably kept track of over 7000 people. And I had to learn all that in 4 months time. Keeps your head swimming in information. The employees at both the downtown and Jayhawk locations are wonderful people. MOST of the supervisors are okay too. Won't “out” the bad ones, but you've probably dealt with them. Oh, and there is no health insurance for the newbies…gotta pay for that yourself till you get a route of your own. Overall, great pay….. not so good working conditions.
