Free State, Lawrence flag football teams go undefeated in weekend doubleheader

The Free State and Lawrence flag football teams both went 2-0 over the weekend in games against Olathe South and Olathe North.

Free State started with a 39-12 win over Olathe South, scoring 26 points in the opening quarter and 13 in the second. The Falcons scored a touchdown in the second and fourth, as Free State held the lead through the second half.

The Firebirds then defeated Olathe North 50-0 to get to 4-1 on the season. Free State took a 30-0 lead into halftime and scored another 20 in the final quarter to get to 50.

Lawrence started with a 58-0 win over Olathe North before getting a close 23-13 win over Olathe South. The two wins moved the Lions to 4-0 on the season and allowed just five points per game while scoring over 39 points per game.

Free State gets 3 golfers in top 5 in Champions Quad; Lawrence gets top-10 placer

The Free State and Lawrence golf teams were at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta in the Champions Quad.

Free State placed second with a 397 score, behind only Olathe South at 389. The Lions didn’t have enough golfers to compile a team score.

Free State’s Claire Cummins was the individual runner-up after shooting an 81, which was three strokes behind the individual winner Caroline Parks from Olathe South. Fellow Firebird Laurel Stancil took third by finishing 20 strokes above par. Tola Jankowski from Free State tied for fifth by shooting a 101.

Cami Nauholz was Lawrence’s top golfer in the tournament by shooting a 104, and Lawrence’s Mila Morrison placed 15th at 113. Firebird Avery Lonnberg tied for 19th by shooting a 123.

Free State cross-country girls take second, boys sixth in Emporia; Lawrence girls take 9th, boys 12th

Lawrence and Free State’s cross-country teams were in Emporia over the weekend, where 17 total schools had a boys or girls team run.

Free State’s girls team took second, finishing only behind Manhattan with 49 points. Taylor Hulcher led the Firebirds by finishing fifth in 20 minutes, 10.80 seconds. Nadia Karapuda just missed the top 10 with a 20:48.60 time that was 11th.

Firebird seniors Allie Gates and Peyton Moore placed 13th and 14th, respectively, as Gates finished in 20:48.60 and Moore finished in 20:59.10. Grace Christline took 21st at 21:39.50, while Eloise Frye finished 26th at 22:09.30. Beau Hulcher came in 32nd at 22:27.30.

The Lawrence girls finished ninth of 12 teams with a 234 score. Chloe Griffith led the Lions at 31st with a 22:22.20 race. Hayley Swart took 41st at 23:03.10, and Adelaide Chaney finished 61st at 24:23.90.

Ruby Oberzan placed 66th at 24:30.60, and Emily Unekis finished in 25:14.70, which was 73rd in the race.

The Free State boys finished sixth with a 186 score. Sawyer Drewery led the Firebirds with an 18:20.30 run. Isaac Horner placed 36th at 18:34.00, and Liam Kepler finished 41st at 18:44.20.

Elliot Ramsey placed 45th at 18:52.20, and Joseph Clossen took 47th at 18:54.70. Moses Minor came in 52nd at 18:59.90, while Drake Nelson finished 54th at 19:00.80.

Lawrence took 12th with a 277 team score. Rohan Mulhern led the Lions by placing 22nd at 18:08.10, while Mateo Klish placed 48th at 18:55.30 and Lawson Donly took 58th at 19:11.20.

Flynn Isaacs placed 81st at 19:43.00, and Murphy Berquist-Haxton took 85th at 19:56.10. Tyler Urban rounded out the team by finishing in 19:58.90, which was 88th in the race.
