A Lawrence man accused of violently attacking his roommate after doing drugs together in 2016 was sentenced Tuesday to just over three years in prison.
A judge ordered Wynn S. A. Anderson, 39, to 37 months in prison followed by two years of post-release supervision, according to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.
Anderson initially was charged with attempted second-degree murder but pleaded no contest and was convicted of a lower-level felony, attempted aggravated battery.
Specifically, according to amended charges, Anderson bit cartilage off the victim’s ear in an attempt to cause greater bodily harm.
The attack happened on Nov. 17, 2016, at Anderson’s home, 1518 Oak Hill Ave.
The victim testified at a preliminary hearing in 2017 that he’d come home to find Anderson trading pills with a friend in exchange for methamphetamine. James W. Conlon, 52 at the time of the stabbing, said he then smoked methamphetamine with the group.
In the early morning hours, Conlon said Anderson called him out on the front porch and stabbed him first in the stomach, then in the back and chest as he tried to escape through the house. He said Anderson also bit off a part of his ear, growled and “spit it in front of me.”
A police sergeant noted that Conlon’s intestines were “lying outside” of his body when officers arrived, according to the affidavit in support of Anderson’s arrest.
Conlon was flown to a hospital, where he spent about two months and underwent at least four surgeries, he testified.
Lawrence police found Anderson with blood on his clothes about six blocks away from the house and arrested him.
