Lawrence man charged in car-pedestrian fatality

Douglas County prosecutors on Tuesday filed a charge of vehicular homicide against a 22-year-old Lawrence man involved in an April fatality accident.

Michael Peng is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 22 in district court, court records said.

On April 7, Peng was driving a car out of his north Lawrence apartment complex when he hit Wallace “Wally” May, who was walking on the sidewalk, police said. May, 80, was pronounced dead at the scene, which was the 200 block of North Michigan Street.

Police have not released a cause of the accident, and prosecutors would not discuss the charge, which comes about four months after the accident.

Vehicular homicide is a misdemeanor in Kansas and is punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 and/or up to one year in jail, prosecutors said.

May was a longtime associate dean for Kansas University Continuing Education and a volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
