The scene of a car-pedestrian fatality Tuesday morning at Michigan and West 3rd Streets.

An 80-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning after being struck by an automobile in the 200 block of North Michigan Street.

Police said Michael Peng, a 22-year-old Lawrence man, was driving a car south out of the entrance to Wood Creek Townhomes, 255 N. Mich., when he hit the man, who was walking north down the sidewalk.

The pedestrian, Wallace May, of Lawrence, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened about 7:42 a.m., police said.

Traffic on North Michigan Street was blocked for several hours in both directions at the scene, which is south of the Kansas Turnpike and north of Lawrence Memorial Hospital, as officers investigated around the white passenger car involved in the wreck.

Peng stopped after the crash and was cooperating with the police investigation, though it was too early to determine whether any arrests would be made or citations issued, Lawrence police Sgt. Bill Cory said.
