Having recently stepped up monitoring for illegal camping, Lawrence police on Thursday reported that they had handled numerous violations Wednesday.

The police department has extra officers patrolling the downtown area for the summer, and they conduct illegal camping checks overnight.

Officers and City of Lawrence representatives found 15 illegal camps set up in the area overnight Wednesday, according to a social media post from LPD. Officers issued trespass warnings and said all violators had complied.

Officers also arrested a woman who they said was found completely nude and using the bathroom on a person’s porch near Eighth and Mississippi streets. The Douglas County Jail log indicates that the 37-year-old woman, whose address is listed as the Lawrence Community Shelter, was arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure and urination/defecation in public.

Officers also reported finding one man sleeping under playground equipment at Seventh and Kentucky streets and another man camping near Ninth and Vermont streets.

Police issued two alcohol violation citations near 18th and Massachusetts.
