Maintaining lily turf

Lily turf, or liriope, should be cut back before new growth appears. Hedge shears are efficient for the job and keep fingers out of harm’s way. Leave a few inches of old growth to avoid damaging the crown of the plant. Liriope rarely needs dividing, but you can lift and cut apart clumps now for planting elsewhere. Set divisions 8 inches apart in enriched, free-draining soil and feed them lightly. They will fill in after two growing seasons.

¢ In Thursday’s Pulse section, Garden Spot columnist Jennifer Oldridge recommended liriope as an excellent ground cover that can withstand the Kansas heat. See the column online in the Living section.
