Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs has undergone yet another name change.
Tuesday morning, Chris Fritz, president of New West Presentations, announced the new name: Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone.
"It's part of a marketing initiative to get our name out into the Kansas City area," said John Dicus, president and CEO of Capitol Federal Savings.
Sandstone, which previously was managed by Live Nation, came under management by New West Presentations in January.
The venue previously was known as Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. When New West took over, the name changed to Sandstone Amphitheater.
The announcement of the new name - made on Earth Day - provided an opportunity for Sandstone officials to talk about plans to make the venue more environmentally friendly.
Eventually, all electrical needs at Sandstone will be filled by renewable energy in the form of solar power and, it is hoped, wind power, according to Jesse Jackson, director of green initiatives for Sandstone.
Exceptions would be the stage and refrigeration units for concession stands. Some of the restrooms and concession stands are already solar-powered, Jackson said.
Plans to install up to three large wind turbines near the site's main entrance at 633 N. 130th St. in Bonner Springs are on hold until the Bonner Springs Planning Commission decides whether the city should regulate wind turbines.
