Disease-free roses

An early-season spray against black spot on roses will go a long way toward keeping plants disease-free. Organic sprays are available, including lime sulfur and copper. The home remedy of baking soda in solution is not considered effective against black spot.

Pick up all of last year’s leaves and remove any new leaves at the first sign of yellowing. The best defense against the disease is to plant a resistant variety placed in an area of good air circulation.
