46th District: Paul Davis (D)

Kansas House Rep. Paul Davis, a Democrat, took 86 percent of the vote Tuesday, easily winning a third term.

Davis, whose district is in east Lawrence, said he will focus on education in the coming legislative session.

“Education has really been the paramount issue for the past couple of years,” he said. “And it’s certainly going to be near the forefront of the legislative debate.”

With 14 of 15 precincts in the 46th District reporting, Davis captured 3,542 votes to Libertarian Marcus Kirby’s 544 votes.

Davis, an attorney, campaigned on keeping intact the Legislature’s $466 million, three-year K-12 school funding commitment. He said he also hopes to tackle health care reform and making health insurance more affordable for small businesses.

Kirby, a third-year political science major at Kansas University, campaigned on reducing federal government’s role in education, removing the sales tax on food purchases and limiting the state’s use of eminent domain.
