Bonner Springs murder at store remains unsolved

? More than four months after Tonganoxie resident Robin Bell’s murder, the case remains unsolved.

The 44-year-old manager of the Bonner Springs Dollar General store at 612 S. 130th St. was found dead the morning of Nov. 12 in the back of the store. Bell had suffered severe head wounds, Bonner Springs police said.

Bonner Springs Police Lt. Rick Schubert said recently that the department has had no new developments he could speak of since then.

All the leads the department had in the weeks following the murder, estimated at more than 100, either “didn’t go anywhere or I can’t talk about,” Schubert said.

Shortly after the investigation began, police questioned a 19-year-old former store employee they termed a “person of interest.” Police later said he was not a suspect in Bell’s death.

The Metro Squad of 14 detectives assigned to the case disbanded the week after the murder.

Bell’s widower, Don Bell, said that while he is eager for the case to be solved, he understands the need for a methodical investigation.

“I just hope they’re taking their time and doing it right,” he said. “You can’t charge someone twice.”

Bell, who works as a security officer at Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, Mo., said his life had “changed quite a bit” since his wife died. He added, “I’ll survive – life goes on. I got kids and grandkids to live for.”

Robin Bell’s coworkers at Dollar General said they were told by the corporate headquarters not to comment on the case.

An $11,000 reward remains in place for information leading to an arrest in the case. Tips should be reported to the Bonner Springs Police Department at 422-7800.
