Historic hotel: Kansas City’s Raphael features eclectic style

Billed as Kansas City’s elegant “little” hotel, The Raphael enjoys a prime location on the Country Club Plaza.

Constructed in 1927 as an apartment building, the hotel now offers 35 rooms and 88 suites, all decorated in an eclectic, Old World style.

A night in a suite for two with a full view of the Plaza Christmas lights is part of the prize package in “Home and Away’s” Kansas City Holiday Getaway contest. The package also includes two tickets for “A Christmas Carol” at the Missouri Repertory Theatre and dinner for two at Boling’s Chinese Restaurant on Dec. 20. Enter by sending your name, phone number and e-mail address to homeandaway@sunflower.com or fill out at entry form at the Sunflower Broadband offices, 1 Riverfront Plaza. The drawing will be Dec. 10.

Cathy Hamilton is host of “Home and Away.”

A new show airs at 6:30 p.m. each Monday on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 and repeats at 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The show is also broadcast at 9 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m. Sunday.

The Raphael Hotel, 325 Ward Parkway in Kansas City, Mo., welcomed its first guests in 1975. The nine-story building was constructed in the 1920s, when it operated as the Villa Serena Apartments.

The Raphael's lobby glows with an eclectic mix of antique lamps, furnishings and ornately carved woodwork.

A small booth provides an intimate setting in The Raphael's dining area.

An antique buffet and an old framed painting decorate The Raphael's interior. The hotel will be featured next week on Home
