A second Lawrence man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred in May in North Lawrence.

Ontareo X. Jackson, 18, was arrested around 9 p.m. Tuesday on a probable cause warrant on suspicion of two counts of attempted second-degree murder, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log. As of Wednesday afternoon, Jackson was being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $75,000 cash or surety bond.

Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department told the Journal-World on Wednesday that the arrest was related to a shooting on May 27 in North Lawrence, in which a woman who was in a car was hit by gunfire from another vehicle.

Police previously arrested Alejandro Martinez Diaz, of Lawrence, on suspicion of two counts of attempted second-degree murder shortly after the incident, the Journal-World reported. Diaz was released from custody after posting a $75,000 cash or surety bond.

According to charging documents filed in Douglas County District Court, both men are charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, which is a level-three felony. If convicted, they would be facing a minimum sentence of 55 months, or about 4.5 years, in prison for each count if they have little to no criminal history, according to Kansas sentencing guidelines.

As the Journal-World previously reported, shortly after 7 p.m. on May 27, a man called 911 and said a woman in his vehicle had been shot near the intersection of North Seventh Street and North Street.

Major Trent McKinley told the Journal-World at the time that a woman was hit by at least one shot and suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening, and that the man who was driving the vehicle transported her to LMH Health.

McKinley said officers spoke with the woman, the occupants of the vehicle and nearby residents who heard gunfire. He said that police thought one or more people in another vehicle fired “numerous gunshots” at the vehicle the woman was in. He said the suspects fled the area after the shooting and that police believed some of the people in both vehicles knew one another.
