A Franklin County first responder walks toward a fire inside a building on Old U.S. 59 Highway on Thursday, Sept. 10. The fire left one woman dead, one man injured and one infant injured.

One woman died and a man and infant were injured in a structure fire in Franklin County Thursday night.

Emergency personnel responded to the fire at 3722 Old U.S 59 highway, about two miles north of Ottawa, shortly after 7 p.m. When they arrived, they found a deceased woman.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said an adult male and an infant suffered burns and were taken to KU Medical Center for treatment.

The sheriff’s office has not released any victims’ names or said what caused the fire.

The sheriff’s office said the building was “fully engulfed” when they arrived. A photo posted on Facebook by Mark Engholm, Kansas’ state fire marshal, who happened to drive by, shows black smoke coming out of every window in the structure. A neighboring business who witnessed the fire described it as “huge.”

The sheriff’s office, along with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it is investigating the fire.

According to Franklin County records, the building is owned by Paint It Inc. with a mailing address in Ottawa, and at one point operated a business called The Carpet Warehouse Inc.. However, it is unclear what the building was being used for at the time of the fire. The Carpet Warehouse hasn’t filed an annual report with the Kansas Secretary of State’s office since 2011.
