Lawrence police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a shooting in North Lawrence last week.

Alejandro Martinez Diaz, of Lawrence, was arrested around 7 p.m. Friday on suspicion of two counts of second-degree attempted murder, the Douglas County booking log shows. Diaz posted a $75,000 cash or surety bond later that day and is no longer in custody.

Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department said Tuesday that the arrest stemmed from the reported shooting in North Lawrence on Thursday. As the Journal-World previously reported, shortly after 7 p.m., a man called 911 and said a woman in his vehicle had been shot near the intersection of North Seventh Street and North Street.

Major Trent McKinley told the Journal-World that a woman was hit by at least one shot and suffered injuries that weren’t life-threatening and that the man who was driving the vehicle transported her to LMH Health.

McKinley said officers spoke with the woman, the occupants of the vehicle and nearby residents who heard gunfire. He said that police thought one or more people in another vehicle fired “numerous gunshots” at the vehicle the woman was in. He said the suspect’s vehicle, which was described as a gray or silver sedan, fled the area after the shooting and police believed some of the people in both vehicles knew one another.
