The Douglas County district attorney’s office has filed a charge in connection with an August shooting that critically injured a 6-year-old boy.
Rashun B. Lewis is facing a charge of aggravated endangering a child, a low-level felony, for allegedly allowing a child “to be placed in a situation in which the child’s life, body or health is endangered,” according to the charging document in the case.
Lewis has been issued a summons, and he is scheduled for a first appearance in court on Nov. 5. Court records did not yet list an attorney who could speak to the Journal-World on Lewis’ behalf as of Thursday.
The boy, 6-year-old Tayshawn Mack Harris, was flown to a Kansas City-area hospital in critical condition late in the evening on Aug. 5 after being shot at a home in the 700 block of West 25th Street, Lawrence police previously told the newspaper.
Tayshawn’s mother, Tyeisha Bell, told the Journal-World previously that her son was shot in the right side of his head while visiting a friend’s house, and she wasn’t sure how it happened.
Lawrence police told the Journal-World that no foul play was suspected in the shooting when it occurred.
Tayshawn stabilized, but he remained in critical condition for days following the shooting. A little more than a week after the incident, though, Bell told the Journal-World that his doctors were saying his recovery was a miracle, and they’d never seen anything like it.
She also said in August that Tayshawn would have to have another surgery to have a plate put in his head in three to six months. Until then, he would have to wear a helmet, and he was a fall risk because of missing bone in his head, Bell said at the time.
Tayshawn’s aunt, Saterra Preciado, also told the Journal-World in August that emotions were on high because the people Tayshawn was visiting were longtime family friends who have watched the boy grow up.
Bell could not be reached for an interview Thursday.
