Numerous repairs were underway at a Lawrence appliance store Monday afternoon after it was struck by a car earlier in the day.

Jack Flynn, the sales manager at Stoneback Appliance, 925 Iowa St., told the Journal-World that the incident at around 10 a.m. happened very quickly. He initially thought the incredibly loud noise he heard was a display of dishwashers falling over in the store, but he soon realized a car had driven through the storefront about 3 or 4 feet into the building.

The car quickly backed out into the parking lot after the accident, and Flynn was happy to see that no one had been injured. No customers were in the store at the time, and the driver appeared to be OK, though paramedics were called as a precaution.

Flynn said a couple of new dishwashers near the window were damaged in addition to the building itself, which is at the eastern end of the Hillcrest Shopping Center.

According to Lawrence police, the vehicle was a Toyota Prius, whose driver thought he was in reverse when he was actually in drive. Flynn said it was not a high-speed incident.

The bulk of the damage appeared to be near the corner of the building. Plywood covered a large portion of the storefront as repair people, including glaziers, worked into late afternoon.

Though lined with yellow caution tape, the store remained open throughout most of the day.

Lawrence police spokesperson Laura McCabe said that fire department personnel assessed the building’s structure after the collision and that the damage seemed relatively minor. McCabe confirmed that no one was injured during the incident.

In addition to selling and repairing appliances, the Stoneback store is known for being the site of the shopping center’s large rooftop Nativity every Christmas season, a Hillcrest tradition that goes back to the 1950s.
