The executive director of local non-profit Family Promise of Lawrence resigned Friday due to unforeseen circumstances.
Monique Wahba, who joined the non-profit on May 20, resigned effective immediately. Wahba said in a statement that despite initial enthusiasm and optimism, “the role and its demands do not align” with her career goals. Despite the departure, Wahba said she believes the organization is poised for success.
“I have no doubt that under the right leadership, FPL will achieve its strategic objectives and continue to make a significant impact,” Wahba said.
The organization provides shelter and runs other programs geared towards families who are homeless.
The FPL board selected Brenda Wahl, the current Director of Operations, to be the Interim Executive Director. A spokesperson said the organization will restart its search process and is hoping to begin its official search next week.
Matt Sturtevant, the FPL board president, said the community benefited from Wahba’s leadership, and the board “(wishes) her only the best in her next endeavor.”
“Family Promise Lawrence continues its ongoing work without disruptions, as we have an incredibly strong, committed staff and board,” Sturtevant said.
FPL is a branch of the national Family Promise organization that works to help families facing housing issues. Since its founding in 2008, FPL has served more than 2,000 local families.
