Traffic moves past in the 2500 block of Iowa Street on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026.

Lawrence will be getting $400,000 through a state road improvement program for a future project on south Iowa Street, Gov. Laura Kelly’s office said this week.

Kelly’s office announced the funding on Tuesday, and city spokesman Michael Leos confirmed on Thursday that it would be used to help pay for a resurfacing project on Iowa between 23rd and 31st streets. The project is not expected to begin until summer 2028, Leos said.

When it does begin, Leos said the work will include mill and overlay, full-depth pavement patching and replacement, curb and gutter repair and sidewalk ramp improvements. Kelly’s office said the project’s total cost, including the $400,000 award, will be just over $2 million.

The funding is through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s City Connecting Link Improvement Program, or CCLIP, which gives cities federal and state funds to repair streets with highway designations (Iowa Street is U.S. 40/59). Kelly’s office said that 32 projects would receive a total of $24.1 million in funding, and that $7 million of that would be from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

No other cities in Douglas County are receiving funding through the program in this cycle, but a few other cities in the northeast Kansas region will; Leavenworth, Atchison and Emporia will each get $400,000, and Manhattan will get $1.5 million.

“KDOT and our local partners are committed to working together and making these transportation enhancements possible,” Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed said in a news release from the governor’s office. “These improvements to infrastructure allow areas across the state to continue to serve the public and encourage economic opportunities in the future.”
