A fresh blanket of snow covered Lawrence on Tuesday — a somewhat unusual occurrence for late April.

Though the snow melted quickly, a freeze watch is in effect in Douglas County from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Steps should be taken to protect plants from the cold and outdoor water pipes should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly, the National Weather Service recommended.

On Tuesday, the high is expected to be 44 degrees and the low 26. The weather should warm up for the rest of the week, with highs in the 50s through Friday and highs in the 60s on the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
