Douglas County Sheriff files for re-election

Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister

Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister has filed for re-election in a bid to secure a second term as the county’s lead law enforcement officer.

Armbrister, 48, of Baldwin City, won his first term in office in 2020 after winning the Democratic Primary by more than 1,300 votes along with Undersheriff Stacy Simmons. No republicans had filed for the office and he took over for retired Sheriff Ken McGovern in January of 2021, as the Journal-World reported.

Other potential candidates have until June 3 to register and voters have until July 16 to register for the county’s primary election, according to the Douglas County Clerk’s website.

The last day to apply for advance voting mail ballots is on July 30 with in-person voting for the primary to commence on August 5-6. The general election is will be held on November 5.
