The City of Lawrence announced it is accepting ideas for capital improvement projects from the public as part of developing its five-year Capital Improvement Plan.

The Capital Improvement Plan acts as a blueprint for sustaining and improving community infrastructure. The CIP contains specific projects that exceed $100,000 and either create a new asset or enhance an existing asset beyond its useful life.

The city announced Tuesday the process of developing the CIP for 2027-2031 has begun, and it encouraged the public to submit ideas for projects, which can include needed repairs to existing infrastructure like roads or sidewalks and the construction of new assets.

Previous examples of publicly submitted funding requests for the CIP include a proposal that would have added protected bike lanes along Kentucky and Tennessee Streets and a proposal to provide funding for the project to create a permanent pavilion for the Lawrence Farmers Market.

The city requests applications from residents for specific projects that address an infrastructure need in their neighborhood or elsewhere in the City, or groups developing a project that is anticipated to have city participation.

Materials for the application and additional information is available at the city’s website. The deadline for submitting requests is 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.
