Style Scout: Anne and John Hedeman

John: J-41 shoes, not sure of price; Land’s End linen pants, not sure of price; Kohl’s shirt, . Anne: Franco Sarto shoes, 0, Chico’s pants, 9; silk top, 0 from Paris; earrings, from Paris; bag, Nordstrom, 5.

Relationship status: We’re going to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary this summer!

Age and hometown:

John: I’m 64 and my hometown is Baltimore.

Anne D: I am 61. I was born in Patterson, N.J., but I never lived there.

Time in Lawrence:

Anne D: A year and a half.

John: We moved here during the drought of 2012.

Occupation:

Anne D: I was a professor at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and now I’m the Judith Harris Murphy Distinguished Professor of Art History here at KU.

John: I was an assistant dean in the business school at the University of Illinois and now I’m the director of student international experiences at KU (School of Business).

So I guess I have to skip the next question about dream jobs:

Anne D./John: Oh yeah, we have them.

What were you doing when scouted? Strolling down Mass. Street.

Describe your style:

John: I’m a Kohl’s clearance rack guy! I go there with my 30 percent off coupon. That’s where this shirt came from. I’m definitely a discount shopper!

Anne D: I like black pants from different places: this one is from Chico’s but I also get black silk pants from Eileen Fisher. I wear silk a lot, jackets and shirts, from a place in Paris where I buy them. So (my style) … is all black and color.

Fashion trends you love:

Anne D: I guess what I like is eclectic: I like to see people finding their own look and doing it.

John: And I don’t have a clue. I really don’t have a clue!

Fashion trends you hate:

John: I don’t like to see sloppy. It seems to me that somehow we lost the concept of dressing up, and it doesn’t have to be fancy like (wearing) a black tie.

Anne D: I like to see what people are wearing and how it fits them. As somebody that is getting on in age, I like to look at young folks and see what is new and interesting. Not that I would wear what they do, but I can appreciate it.

Fashion influences:

John: My fashion has not changed in four decades. I have yet to be influenced by fashion trends.

Anne D: I get my ideas from travel and observation.

What would you like to see more or less of in Lawrence?

John: We’d like to see Trader Joe’s.

Anne D: …or Whole Foods.

John: … and a really good ice cream store. There’s not a good Italian gelato around here!

Anne D: Even an ice cream cart (serving Italian gelato) would be feasible. Less of? We really like Lawrence. I like the fact that there are not a lot of chain stores.

Whom do people say you look like?

John: I must look like someone from the Netherlands because insurance sales reps and airport security people speak to me in Dutch as if they know me.

Anne D: The only place I’ve ever been where most people looked like me was Scotland.

What type of music do you like?

John: We’re pretty eclectic when it comes to music… up to 1975 when disco came in.

Anne D: But we have a daughter!

John: Who is 25.

Anne D: Who sends us stuff and I think, ‘Oh, I like that’!

John: So as a family of three we made our top 500 songs of all time: There’s a lot of ’60s, ’70 and ’90s songs. But I’m obsessed with Frank Sinatra.

Anne D: There’s also music from the 2000s by Amy Winehouse and Coldplay. When it comes to music from the 2000s and onward, we rely on our daughter.

Tell us a secret:

Anne D: When I got tenured at Illinois I tried to learn how to tap dance because I thought it would be cool, but I was a dreadful failure. My tap dancing career was very short.

John: If I told you a secret, it would no longer be a secret.
