Douglas County commissioners will consider signing off Wednesday on an agreement to spend $225,000 to keep the Lawrence office of Social and Rehabilitation Services open.

The agreement — brokered in recent months by commissioners — also awaits approval from the Lawrence City Commission, set to consider the pact as part of their meeting at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts.

County commissioners will be expected to do their part Wednesday, during their 4 p.m. meeting at the Douglas County Courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

Leaders for both the city and county responded by working out a deal to keep the office open, despite moves by Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration to close the Lawrence office and others to save money.

Also up for approval Wednesday afternoon:

• An agreement to assume Eudora Township’s financial responsibilities for the Hesper Charter Road Improvement District.

• An amendment to the Southeast Area Plan to reflect the Preliminary Alignment Study for 31st Street.

• A $272,143 purchase, from Zoll Medical Corp., for 11 heart monitors and 11 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for use by Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical.

Commissioners also will hear an appeal from KC Presort regarding a mailing services contract.
