Ethics commission to take up today allegations of nepotism by House Speaker

? The Kansas ethics commission is reviewing a nepotism allegation against House Speaker Mike O’Neal.

The panel scheduled a hearing for Wednesday afternoon.

Democratic Rep. Marti Crow of Leavenworth filed an ethics complaint in March against O’Neal, a Hutchinson Republican who became speaker in January.

Crow claims O’Neal broke the state’s anti-nepotism law because his wife, Cindy O’Neal, was hired as an aide to the House GOP Caucus.

Mike O’Neal has said he had nothing to do with the hiring. His wife has worked for the Legislature during its annuals sessions for 21 years, and the speaker says the decision was made by the majority leader’s office.
