Lawrence, other area school districts cancel classes Friday due to overnight snow
Another bout of winter weather has caused Lawrence public schools and several other districts in the area to cancel classes and activities today.
The Lawrence school district early Friday morning announced that all classes and activities would be closed for the day, Friday, Jan 10. The district was able to hold classes on Thursday, but that was the first day the district had been able to open schools following the holiday break.
“We so enjoyed our time with students yesterday and appreciate the high rate of attendance districtwide,” the district said in a statement announcing that it had determined that overnight snowfall and the refreezing of wet surfaces required that school be cancelled on Friday.
Other districts the have announced closings for Friday, Jan. 10, include:
• Baldwin public schools. All classes canceled, although the district said it will make a decision by noon today whether to cancel basketball games, a wrestling meet and sports practices scheduled for this afternoon and evening.
• Eudora public schools have canceled all classes;
• Tonganoxie public schools have canceled all classes;
The National Weather Service in Topeka on Thursday evening placed Lawrence and much of northeast Kansas in a winter weather advisory, with estimates of one to two inches of snow accumulating in the area.
