It was scorchingly hot on Sunday, but these bikers “ride in anything, rain or shine — for the kids” as Dragonfly put it, and on this day they roared into Lawrence to give a young man what he would later call “the best day of my life.”

That young man, Shawn Collier, thought his family was going to South Park in the July heat only to celebrate his mom’s birthday. When they got there he noticed a group of bikers milling around the Kona shaved-iced truck. Then he noticed they were looking at him. Then he noticed they were gathering around.

Then they were telling him something shocking.

“I’m going to Disney World!” he shouted for those in the park who hadn’t heard what Dream Factory manager Dustin Mitchell had just revealed to him.

“I need a minute,” Shawn said, turning his back to the crowd to collect his emotions and then holding his mom, Michele Collier, in one of the fiercest bearhugs she remembers ever getting from her 16-year-old son.

“He hugged me so tight,” she said later, gleeful at how much he had loved the surprise.

Soon he was hugging everyone else too – Dragonfly, Goose, Dirty, Bull and other members of Flock Nation, who had ridden over in support of Goose Halfdan’s Charity Foundation and the Dream Factory of Greater Kansas City.

Shawn had been selected for the dream reveal — a weeklong Disney and beach excursion in Florida in September — after the organizations heard of the challenges he has faced as a child with TAR Syndrome, a rare congenital disorder that affects his heart, immune system and platelet production, as well as his arms, which lack radius bones.

His medical condition has made him prey for bullies in the Lawrence school district, one of whom, a recently graduated Free State High football player, was convicted of a crime for how he treated Shawn, as the Journal-World reported.

Aside from the hugs and well wishes, there were other gifts — a hat, T-shirts, stickers and a coozie.

“You can put your beer in there,” joked Goose Halfdan, a retired police officer whose charity had helped raise thousands of dollars for Shawn’s dream.

“I’m too young to drink beer,” Shawn replied, drawing a “yes, that’s right” nod from his dad, Jerry Collier.

“Your rum and Coke then,” another biker quipped.

But ew, no.

“I’m going to get myself a free Kona ice!” Shawn said, and headed off to be the first in line for a heaping scoop of berry-flavored ice from the truck.

“How did you know this is one of my favorite truck places?” he asked his mom, his face stained blue.

“Because I’m your mom?” she suggested, supplying the answer to virtually every “how did you know?” kid question in the universe.

Next to the trip, perhaps the most prized of all the gifts was a custom leather biker vest with Shawn’s actual middle name, “Danger,” stitched on it.

“This is for you, brother,” Goose said. “Let’s put it on.”

“I love it!” Shawn said as he modeled the vest and the crowd applauded. “I really love it!”

Shawn’s middle name is a nod to what his mother was told when doctors urged her to reconsider her pregnancy because it would be “dangerous” and Shawn likely wouldn’t survive.

On Sunday, though, he was absolutely thriving, basking in the positive attention, taking some good-natured ribbing over the burgeoning beard on his teenaged chin and thrilling to the sight of dogs romping in the park. Minsky’s Pizza and Dillons also pitched in with some goodies, to his delight.

“I’ve never been this happy in my life!” Shawn exclaimed more than once, noting also that on his dream trip later this summer he would be “going to the best place ever.”

“I don’t know if this is a dream or if I should be waking up,” he said.

As part of the fun, Shawn was also offered a ride on a motorcycle, but he politely declined.

“I’m good,” he said, perhaps to his mother’s — to every mother’s — relief.

Shawn’s grandmother, Gloria Collier, of Hoisington, sat beneath a shade tree Sunday, quietly taking in the joyous moment after a year that had been so difficult for her grandson and his parents.

“How are you feeling about all this?” she was asked.

“This here will tell you,” she said, pointing to tears welling up in her eyes.
