Members of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq,
a Shiite group, work with shovels and bare hands to excavate what
appeared to be a mass grave. The site was filled with the remains
of dozens of people who apparently were executed after a 1991
Shiite uprising in Khan Al-Rubea. About 25 bodies were dug up on
Saturday, and 10 had been identified. About 20 sets of remains were
uncovered Sunday. Tens of thousands of people were killed after
Iraq's Shiite majority rose up after the 1991 Gulf War and seized
control of most of the southern part of the country.
Lester Marsh, 80, of Lawrence, has had a Jayhawk sticker on his
trumpet case for more than 50 years. Marsh hasn't played the
trumpet much since his days in the Army, but he remembers carrying
it through his service in World War II.
