Lawrence City Commissioner Lisa Larsen has filed for election to a seat on the Douglas County Commission.

On Monday, Larsen filed for election in District 2, where County Commissioner Shannon Reid is currently the incumbent. Larsen and Reid, both Democrats, are currently the only candidates to have filed for election in District 2, which includes North Lawrence, the eastern Lawrence area around downtown, Grant Township and the portion of Wakarusa Township north of Lawrence.

As the Journal-World reported, Larsen was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the City Commission in 2015 and later was the top vote winner in the 2017 and 2021 elections. She’s served as mayor twice during her time on the City Commission.

Reid is serving in her first term on the County Commission after being elected in 2020. In the primary election, Reid defeated incumbent Nancy Thellman by just three votes after a hand recount.

Nine candidates have now filed for election to Douglas County Commission seats as the group expands from three members to five. With Larsen’s filing, there are now multiple candidates running in all four districts with seats up for election this year.
