Lawrence school board members to consider new boiler at Billy Mills, hear about visual and performing arts programs

Lawrence school board members will consider replacing a domestic water boiler at Billy Mills Middle School on Monday after one failed.

The school has two domestic water boilers, and while one has stopped working, the other is also nearing its life expectancy, according to a memo in the agenda. The lowest bid to replace the boiler out of service was from Kruse Service LLC in the amount of $74,839. A 10% contingency of $7,483 is also requested for any unforeseen circumstances, with the total project cost of $82,322.

The two water boilers are both original to the construction of Billy Mills in 2007. The agenda said the proposed replacement will reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs and improve overall system performance by reducing strain on the equipment and extending its service life.

As the Journal-World reported, the school district has identified $73.9 million in deferred maintenance and facilities needs but lacks enough current funding to address them all. The figure was calculated in 2025, and it’s based on findings from multiple district studies completed on its total of 23 facilities – including athletic and performing arts spaces – and verified by outside consultants.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, BOARD MEMBERS WILL:

• Hear a presentation from staff about the school district’s visual and performing arts education experiences and opportunities for students. The report will offer an update on programs, include highlights and areas of improvement and next steps going forward. No additional information was included in Monday’s agenda.

• Consider approving an agreement of the AllOne Employee Assistance Program totaling $39,990. The program offers district employees a range of support services and resources, such as helping with stress, anxiety, depression, relationship problems and work-life balance support. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas will reimburse the district for the full cost of the program as part of its wellness benefit.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the district offices, 110 McDonald Drive. To provide in-person public comment, attendees must email PublicComment@usd497.org by noon on Monday. The meeting will also be available via the school district’s YouTube channel.

Starting at $4.45/week.
