Police investigate Monday, May 6, 2024, in North Lawrence after a report of a shooting in the area.

A woman was shot and a man was injured Monday after a dog got loose and attacked the man and his dog, according to Lawrence police.

The incident happened around noon as the man, believed to be in his 60s, was walking his dog in the 700 block of Ash Street in North Lawrence. Police said the man stopped the attack by shooting the attacking dog and killing it, but he also struck the dog’s owner, who was trying to restrain the dog. The woman is believed to be in her late 20s, police said.

The woman, who was shot in the upper leg, was taken to an area trauma center with suspected nonlife-threatening injuries. The man was seen by medics, but declined further treatment on scene. The man’s dog was injured, police said, but they provided no further detail about the injury. Police also did not have information to provide about the kind or size of the dogs involved.

At a residence on Ash Street, police had called Animal Control to remove a dog from a yard so that they could investigate around the scene.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
