Lawrence Public Library’s latest numbers show new facility ranks well statewide

The latest numbers at the Lawrence Public Library continue to indicate the expanded facility is a hit with users. Whether the new numbers attached to the library’s 2016 budget request will be a hit at City Hall remains to be seen.

City commissioners at their Tuesday evening meeting will receive the library’s 2014 annual report. Library Director Brad Allen said he thinks the report shows strong support from local residents but also shows a need for an increase in operational funds. He said he plans to seek about a 5 percent budget increase — or about $200,000.

“We see the numbers in this report as an indication that we have support in the community for what we are doing,” Allen said. “We want to be as lean and mean as we can be, but right now we are a little too lean.”

Among the findings in the library’s annual report was that the library has the highest per-capita circulation numbers of any library in the state that serves a community of more than 35,000 people. But among that group of 10 large libraries, Lawrence ranks No. 7 in terms of per-capita spending on library operations.

In 2014, Lawrence spent $40.36 per person on library operating expenses. That trailed the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, which greatly outspent the others at $95.61 per person. The median spending level for the group was just under $49 per capita.

Other numbers in the report:

• Visitor totals were the fourth highest per capita in the state. The library had 503,892 visits in 2014. Allen expects that number to be at the top of the list in 2015. He said 2014 numbers were affected by the library being in its temporary location in the former Borders building on New Hampshire Street while construction was underway at the Seventh and Vermont site. Since the library moved back to its permanent home in July, Allen said visits are on pace to reach about 600,000 to 700,000 per year.

• The average attendance at library events was the highest in the state. An average of 53 people attended each library event, which was better than No. 2 finisher Manhattan, where average attendance was 32 people. The Lawrence library hosted 1,017 events in 2014.

• The library has 109,235 registered borrowers. During the 2010 campaign for the library bond issue, it was said that the library had about 83,000 library card holders.

• 98,978 people logged onto library computers in 2014.

City commissioners will receive the library’s annual report at their 5:45 p.m. meeting on Tuesday. Commissioners won’t take up the library’s budget request until later this summer.
